Memory 5: Taking care of an abandoned kitty
This memory is extrapolated and expanded from the 2nd Free drama CD. In this track, Nitori writes in his diary about Rin's daily activities because Ntiori is a friggin' stalker. I'm going to provide the snippet that we're working from and then my own personal flair~. Context that is important for this memory is that it occurs right while Rin is having a lot of feelings about his rivalry with Haru.
NITORI: [writing] I had Matsuoka-senpai take a look at my English studies today. As expected from someone who lived in Australia for four years. He has perfect pronunciation. It’s as if I’m talking to a foreigner. Not only is he good at swimming, but he speaks fluent English. Not only is his English good, but he’s among the best ten in all of the school’s subjects. That alone is amazing but just yesterday I came upon something even more amazing. When I left campus for food shopping after practice was over, I saw Matsuoka-senpai pick up a stray cat in the rain and bring it home. Since we can’t keep pets in the dorms, the cat is living in an abandoned school building right now. Matsuoka-senpai is taking to it some leftover mackerel from dinner again. Normally he’s rude and kind of acts like a delinquent, but he’s studious and cool-looking and also a nice guy!
Now, this is just what Nitori sees. I have interpreted this memory through Rin's perspective so it involves a lot more of Rin being miserable about Haru, about not being acknowledge and generally a mess of insecurity issues. The lost cat is something he can confide in without having to worry about dealing with people, which is the last thing Rin wants at this stage. But it's also something he can claim responsibility for and feel like he can help. Even as emo as he is at this point, Rin still has a bit of a romantic in him.
What he learns?
- He likes taking care of strays.
- He was pretty miserable and not great at hiding it.
- He felt like someone was ignoring him and forever out of reach.
- Overall, sucky feelings. But kitty.
